Erich segal novels5/21/2023 Is it because my sister woke me as she cried her way through the end of it? My shock that she was actually reading a book for the pleasure of it? Or that Love Story became something of a cultural icon of the 1970's, a tale everyone talked of (mostly because they saw the movie) and mooned over? Or did it really do that thing that few books do-stick in my head so I can take it back out and examine it as I try to understand why this particular tale stays with me when others are gone the moment the last page is turned.OK, I cried at the end, too. Maudlin, predictable, and way too gooey for my taste at 14 (and at 58).Yet I remember this story above so many others that I would deem better plotted or written. I read it quickly, and recall making fun of my sister for deeming this the best book EVER. Grumbling that it was the ONLY book she ever read, I tossed it on my bookstack. Some time later, "Love Story" came off the bookstack and into my hands. Through her sobs, my sister insisted that I read this, the "best" book she ever read. I reached across the space between our twin beds and pushed the book up enough to see the title - "Love Story." I rolled my eyes and pulled my tattered baby blanket over my face. Erich Segal's first three novels, Love Story, Oliver's Story, and Man, Woman and Child, were all international bestsellers and became major motion pictures. To my amazement, she was reading a book, not something she did often unless required for school.

The author resisted all Hollywood attempts to make a sequel, though last year she sold an option to two London producers for a musical version. ``There are worlds beyond worlds and times beyond times, all of them true, all of them real, and all of them (as children know) penetrating each other,″ she wrote. Her books were intended to convey universal truths in straightforward fashion, she wrote in a 1988 article for The Sunday Times. ``It’s not about sugar and spice, but something from which we grown-ups can learn.″ Travers did not wholly approve of the 1964 Walt Disney film, which won five Academy Awards and starred Julie Andrews as a cutesy, knockabout Mary who kept breaking into song. ``Mary Poppins Comes Back,″ was published in 1935, followed by ``Mary Poppins Opens the Door″ (1944) and ``Mary Poppins in the Park″ (1952). Down to earth, sometimes astringent, she dazzles her two young charges by making medicine taste like candy, sliding up bannisters _ and unpacking her belongings from an empty carpet bag. ``Mary Poppins,″ published in 1934, is the story of a nanny in Edwardian London. Travers died Tuesday at her London home, her family said. Travers, the children’s book author who created Mary Poppins but frowned on the Disney film about the irrepressible English nanny, has died at age 96.

Please look after mother was written by5/21/2023 A terrific novel that stayed with me long after I’d finished its final, haunting pages. Here is a deeply felt journey into a culture foreign to many-yet with a theme that is universal in its appeal. Weaving together four vivid voices-of daughter, son, husband, and mother, each with the immediacy of a whispered confession-she has created a heartbreaking family mystery. Cleverly structured and brimming with secrets and revelations, Please Look After Mom is a powerful and memorable read. -Edwidge Danticat, author of Breath, Eyes, Memory and Brother, I’m Dying “Kyung-sook Shin has managed some kind of alchemy in this novel. We join this family as soon as we open these pages and we never quite leave it. I loved this book. -Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story “A suspenseful and moving book. This is a tapestry of family life that will be read all over the world. But it also speaks beautifully to an urgent issue of our time: migration, and how the movement of people from small towns and villages to big cities can cause heartbreak and even tragedy. Readers should find resonance in this family story, a runaway bestseller in Korea poised for a similar run here. - Publishers Weekly “ Please Look After Mom is an authentic, moving story that brings to vivid life the deep family connections that lie at the core of Korean culture.

Lightlark book 25/20/2023 However, I definitely enjoyed it, and I can’t wait for the sequel to come out! I understand why some people might not like this book. And isn’t that why we read? To enjoy a book so much we find ourselves separated from something when we pull away? I felt like I was in there with the characters experiencing the story by their side. It wasn’t just a book, it was like an entire experience, so immersive and magical. It was everything I want in a book and more. I couldn’t stop gasping at the plot twists, giggling at the romance, and shivering at the parts that gave me chills. It’s super hyped and I didn’t know whether that hype was justified or just good marketing.īut I was pleasantly surprised! Actually, more than that. Lightlark was truly such a gem, and if I’m being perfectly honest, I didn’t expect it to be. Date finished: Wednesday, October 26, 2022

Tade thompson books5/20/2023 Those demons step out of the shadows, driving Thompson-the-narrator into all sorts of risky behaviour - financial, sexual, and spiritual. The line between real life and fiction, between art and illusion, however becomes paper thin. We also learn a lot about the (fictional? I hope so) Thompson. In documenting that obsession, we get a lot of information about Bacon, one of those artists whose creativity and wider life were closely associated with his demons. And Jackdaw certainly is that - following that protagonist as he spirals into an, eventually, dangerous obsession with Bacon. In the book Thompson - the doctor who is the protagonist of the book, not the doctor who is the author of it - is approached with a commission to produce something inspired by the artist Francis Bacon. Jackdaw showcases Thompson writing in a rather different vein from his previous fantasy and SF, I think. |
